Bernie Sanders Interview

By Ruth Conniff
December 2005

Bernie Sanders, the independent, socialist Representative from Vermont, is poised to win the Senate seat vacated by Jim Jeffords in 2006. According to the Associated Press, Sanders has received donations from 100 times as many Vermont supporters as his likely opponent, the self-financed, Bentley-driving corporate executive Rich Tarrant.

An outspoken critic of the Patriot Act, the first lawmaker to take a busload of constituents to Canada to buy prescription drugs, the leader of a successful effort to block the Bush Administration’s plan to slash worker pensions, and an economic populist with crossover appeal to Vermont’s rural dairy farmers as well as liberals in Burlington, Sanders is the kind of down-to-earth grassroots candidate willing to oppose the Republicans in no uncertain terms. Without taking corporate PAC money, he has managed to win against better-financed Republican opponents again and again. In 1996, when Newt Gingrich put up a well-financed candidate to unseat him, Sanders won reelection with 55 percent of the vote. -- Bernie Sanders Interview Full Story...

I cannot support a mission that leads to corruption, human rights abuse, and liars. I am sullied. I came to serve honorably and feel dishonored. Death before being dishonored any more.

Dead heroes are supposed to come home with their coffins draped with the American flag – greeted by a color guard. But in reality, many are arriving as freight on commercial airliners – stuffed in the belly of a plane with suitcases and other cargo.

IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR (IVAW)

10 Good Things about Another Bad Year
    By Medea Benjamin

As we close this year, a year in which we were pummeled by the Iraq war, attacks on our civil rights, and Mother Nature's fury of hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis, there is no shortage of reasons to feel bruised and beaten. But to start the New Year with a healthy determination to keep on fighting, we need to reflect on the good things that happened. And there are plenty.

One continent alone - South America - could provide more than ten examples of wonderful progressive victories, but I'll just list some of the highlights. (see story)

The Supreme Court Nominee

The standards that we believe our Supreme Court nominee must meet are those that were set during the tenure of both Justice Wm. J. Brennan and Justice Wm. O. Douglas:

1.) That the liberty and the privacy of each American shall be respected.

2.) Standing in Court shall expand to all who need the protection of the Federal Courts.

3.) That a government of the people shall serve all the people and that the Supreme Court shall insure that promise.

In our view, the humanity and intelligence of Justices Brennan and Douglas are the qualities that Americans demand of Supreme Court justices with lifetime appointments.

The nominee should be forward-looking with understanding and compassion for the average American...a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States who sees that when liberty and privacy are protected in America, it is a better place for us now and in the future.

This benchmark set by Justices Brennan and Douglas is difficult to equal, but it is one that can be met with a thorough search for the candidate that aspires to those standards that they set. It is without doubt that the diligence of hard working people in the coming months will find a candidate that has these qualities.

With respect for the importance of this permanent decision, taking time to find a justice of the caliber of Brennan and Douglas is well worth the effort. "A job worth doing is worth doing right," we teach our children. This is the message that we need to send to the President and the Senate of the United States of America.
